Google Analytics is a good tool for this, and is free. It’s easy to install and set up. I also recommend Google Webmasters Tools.
Taking a look at your current traffic, how they are finding you, and how long they are staying on your site is a great first step in formulating a strategy.
Google Webmasters can also give you an idea of what Google thinks your website is about. This can suggest some immediate changes to your content.
For certain clients, other specialized online tools are worth the expense. But for most, the first steps are these.
